Authors' Purpose
James Frey - Although this book is not an autobiography, it is still based on the facts of a true story. He explains in a note to the reader that some of the book is truth and there is also a lot of exaggeration and some made up parts. He does this for effect and to grab the reader's attention. The main purpose of this book was to help people with addictions or to help the families and friends of people with addictions to understand what it is like to go through this. He wanted to be sure people knew the bad parts and how hard it is to be an addict but also wanted to give people hope that they can recover and change. He doesn't really relate to a character in the book. He writes the book about himself. The main character is James Frey. Although, again, not all the facts are exact. Some are for effect. He wrote the book after he recovered from his addictions. He used his memories, some notes from medical files and his personal journals. He also heard from other people details he did not remember.
